Prepping for the Holidays Without the Stress

Happy Friday! Not only am I excited for the weekend but I am extra excited because my husband comes home today after being gone for 9 days on business. Not that I was counting or anything but man, parenting solo is no joke. Hats off to all the moms and dads out there whose spouses are deployed or travel often because you are my hero’s! It has been hard enough feeding and taking care of myself and the children but we also have 6 pets … that is 6 more mouths to feed! Not to mention the cleaning and tidying after everyone on an hourly basis. Halloween Bingo with Welch’s

When September 1st rolled around, all I could think about was Halloween. I am one of those people who literally eats, sleeps and breaths Halloween. That has rubbed off on my children and it’s so fun to experience holidays through your kids eyes. I try to plan festive activities throughout the month to really keep the excitement going. I have nearly 31 Halloween themed books and we read a new one each night, we watch movies, bake cupcakes, drive around and look at decorations and eat way too much candy corn. They are finally at the age where they can understand rules … getting them to follow them is another thing 🙂

We also know that little bellies get hungry very often so before I transform our kitchen table into a game station, I prep some snacks to ward off any hangry kids. Cut out all the Halloween icons and give to your child so they can arrange on the board however they want, trust me they will get a kick out of this. If they’re old enough to use child friendly scissors, then the big kids can do this part too. Once they have laid out their pieces, hand out the Welch’s Fruit Snacks for them to use as their markers. I end up giving my kids two bags each because they always end up eating all their pieces, haha. Halloween Bingo is such a great game to play with your kids. If your little ones are too young to grasp the concept, you can always just tell them to place the fruit snack on the picture instead of calling out the usual bingo terms. This activity has been such a life saver for long days when the kids are getting restless. It’s also helped me with nap time because I promise Halloween bingo if they sleep 🙂

We’ve played this a few times now and my kids love matching the fruit snacks to everything on the board. It’s gotten to the point where Henry now tells Evelyn where to place her markers and the basis of the game goes completely out the window. I love that they are using their imagination and having fun, which is what childhood is all about. While I was at the store grabbing the fruit snacks I picked up some inexpensive Halloween items for the kids. Some fake fingers, vampire teeth and sunglasses really add to the festive game and make it way more fun. Trying to watch kids pick up fruit snacks with long witches fingers on is hilarious to everyone.

The Bond Between Fathers & Daughters

There aren’t many things sweeter than the relationship between a father and daughter. As many of you know, my father passed away last year and I’ve been in a stage of grief and mourning ever since. My dad was always there to talk to, always made time for me, always took care of me and was so selfless in our relationship. Looking back I don’t feel like I always deserved him since he was such an amazing father and I didn’t always tell him how much he meant to me. No matter how many times I screwed up in life my dad never judged me and I never felt loved any less. Trust me, I’ve made my fair share of mistakes in my youth and adult life and my dad was always there to listen and help me. My mom was always the tough parent but my dad was more laid back. If I knew I had done something really wrong, I would call him first because I knew he’d understand. I definitely miss him more than words can describe, but I am so thankful that I have the amazing relationship of my daughter and husband to watch grow for years to come. She definitely gets away with a lot more than her brother ever did and he is much more lenient with her. The bond between fathers and daughters is so magical and amazing to witness.

Skirting the Issue

Learning Colors the Fun Way

With Henry on Fall break this week, having both kids at home is reminding me of those long summer days that felt like they were never going to end. It’s great for kids who are just learning their colors and also good for school aged children to really use their imagination and see what objects they can find. This Halloween, Skip the Sugar, Not the Fun

Having friends over for playdates is something I have enjoyed doing since Henry was a baby. The moms group I’m apart of has the most amazing ladies and it is always so fun to get together so the kids can play and us moms can have adult conversations. Weekends in our house have been insane lately. We’ve either been traveling, have had birthday parties, ER visits, or Fall activities going on.
