5 PRACTICAL WAYS FOR TEACHING YOUR CHILDREN TO GIVE BACK

With the holiday season in full swing, now is the perfect time to start thinking about ways to help your community and those in need. We often think that only adults can volunteer and give back, but that doesn’t always have to be the case. Talk to your children about those who may be less fortunate. Educate them on ways to help others. There are plenty of acts of service that can be done by kids of all ages. It may be going through toys they don’t play with clothes they’ve grown out of or it could be purchasing food and goods to donate to a local shelter. Teach them about putting others first, and treating everyone they meet with respect. Giving will come to them a lot easier and naturally if they genuinely care about others. It can also teach them a sense of responsibility from an early age. If you don’t know where to start, here are 5 easy ways to teach your kids about giving back.

1. Baking some homemade goodies. This is definitely the most delicious way of volunteering and it won’t seem like a chore. Kids love being hands on in the kitchen and what better way to give back then including them in meal preparation for those in need. Let them assist you in making a casserole or some fun holiday cookies. My kids favorite part about baking is pressing the cookie cutters in the dough!

2. Visit a retirement home. Nothing makes us smile more like kids acting silly and being themselves. From the funny stories they tell, or how they pronounce words, kids universally have one thing in common: they’re stinking cute. Take your cute kids to a local retirement home so they can put a smile on the face of their elders. It’s absolutely free and they can bring pictures they’re drawn to brighten everyone’s day, as well as you and your children being able to listen to some inspiring retirement stories.

3. Quick acts of kindness. We all know kids have a short attention span, and mine are no different. I’ve gotten some of the best responses from my kids when I assign simple, short tasks. Remember that we want to inspire kids to give back, not have it seem forced. A simple compliment, smile or even holding the door for a stranger can make children feel accomplished, thus wanting to help more.

4. By purchasing Huggies diapers at Kroger, you can support those families struggling with diaper need. 5. Don’t forget to include pets too! My children absolutely love all animals. They jump at any chance to visit the pet store and love going to the dog park to see the dogs play. Both of our dogs are shelter rescues so they know the abundance of animals out there that need homes. Donating food, blankets,bed, bowls, and toys to your local animal shelter will help out immensely. Above all else, animals want love and affection. If your local shelter allows kids to spend some one-on-one time with all the furry friends, encourage your children to spread the love to our furry friends too.

There’s No Crying in Baseball!

It’s here! My favorite holiday is finally here. I’m so excited to share Henry and Evelyn’s costumes with you today. A few months back one of my favorite movies, A League of Their Own, was playing one night and that’s when it hit me: the kids were going to be Jimmy Dugan and Dottie Hinson. I immediately began scouring small shops for the perfect costumes before I found an amazing seamstress on Etsy who handmade both. I couldn’t be happier with the costumes and they just may be my favorite duo yet. Check out last years Little Red Riding Hood & The Big Bad Wolf and the previous years Firefighter & Dalmatian. Pumpkin Patching

The weather in Atlanta lately has been absolutely phenomenal. The crisp air and cooler temperatures are what I look forward to all year. October is definitely my favorite month for doing all the fun fall activities and today we finally went to the pumpkin patch and loaded up on pumpkins. Usually we go earlier in the month but since by husband has been traveling so much we haven’t gotten around to it. Plus, I love the fact that today was chilly which made the experience so much better. The kids loved that they could wear their matching Halloween pjs and since we got to the pumpkin patch early, they had the whole place to themselves. What is your favorite thing to do during October? Prepping for the Holidays Without the Stress

Happy Friday! Not only am I excited for the weekend but I am extra excited because my husband comes home today after being gone for 9 days on business. Not that I was counting or anything but man, parenting solo is no joke. Hats off to all the moms and dads out there whose spouses are deployed or travel often because you are my hero’s! Halloween Bingo with Welch’s

When September 1st rolled around, all I could think about was Halloween. I am one of those people who literally eats, sleeps and breaths Halloween. That has rubbed off on my children and it’s so fun to experience holidays through your kids eyes. I try to plan festive activities throughout the month to really keep the excitement going. I have nearly 31 Halloween themed books and we read a new one each night, we watch movies, bake cupcakes, drive around and look at decorations and eat way too much candy corn. Now that my kids are getting older, I want to incorporate more holiday themed games into the mix. They are finally at the age where they can understand rules … getting them to follow them is another thing 🙂

We also know that little bellies get hungry very often so before I transform our kitchen table into a game station, I prep some snacks to ward off any hangry kids. This activity has been such a life saver for long days when the kids are getting restless. It’s also helped me with nap time because I promise Halloween bingo if they sleep 🙂

We’ve played this a few times now and my kids love matching the fruit snacks to everything on the board. It’s gotten to the point where Henry now tells Evelyn where to place her markers and the basis of the game goes completely out the window. I love that they are using their imagination and having fun, which is what childhood is all about. While I was at the store grabbing the fruit snacks I picked up some inexpensive Halloween items for the kids. Some fake fingers, vampire teeth and sunglasses really add to the festive game and make it way more fun. Trying to watch kids pick up fruit snacks with long witches fingers on is hilarious to everyone.
