henry

two and a half update

This past Monday we took Henry for his two and a half year check up. (I still can’t believe I have a 2.5 year old and a 2.5 week old!) He has grown 1/2 an inch since his last appointment and gained two pounds. Ha, sounds like he’s taking after his mommy 🙂 Hopefully he will be tall like his daddy and not a shorty like me! Here are a few things that have his attention lately.

Dance Parties: This kid loves to dance and listen to music. If we let him, that is all he would do. All. Day. Long. With the volume up as high as it could go. There is an old radio in our guest bedroom which he is literally obsessed with. He is always asking to do dance party and when we tell him he can’t, he acts like one of the deprived high-schoolers in Footloose. We had to hide the old radio since it has a power cord and half the fun to him is taking it around the house and plugging it in all the outlets, then dancing in every room. To avoid the forseeable tripping over the cord and tumbling down the stairs accident that would have no doubt happened, we bought him his own portable blue radio from Target which he can carry anywhere and is battery operated. I think that was a good idea? I will probably be kicking myself in the ass when he blasts it in the babies eardrum. But until then, it keeps him happy and he can get out some energy.  As if this latest obsession isn’t amusing enough, he always tunes the radio to 97.1 The River, which is classic rock. He has been getting down to Bob Seger, the Faces, Aerosmith and yesterday I caught him galloping around in circles to ‘D’Yer Mak’Er’.

Click here for a cute video of him dancing (and having so much energy right before bed time)

Outlets: Like mentioned above, this kid is still obsessed with outlets. He loves plugging in and unplugging different electronics and turning them on and off. He doesn’t stick foreign objects into the outlets, just cords, and then turning the device off an on. Maybe he will be a master electrician someday.

Playgrounds: We finally took the plunge and purchased an outdoor playground/swing set for Henry. He has so many little toys already that we are running out of space in our house so we might as well invest in something he and his sister can use for a long time and can be kept outdoors. We went and checked out the sets this past weekend and ended up finding one that we all liked. The install date is mid March so that’ll give Jan enough time to work on clearing a spot in the back yard and time for the weather to get a little warmer.

Power Wheels: My dad bought Henry a ford truck power wheels for Christmas and whenever he goes outside that is the first thing he wants to do. He really just goes around in circles right now with this blank look on his face which is so funny because he is obviously enjoying himself.

2 Year Old Rambling

I haven’t done a monthly update post in a long time, but since Henry will be 2 1/2 next month, it seemed fitting to do one. I still can’t get over the fact that I have a toddler. This is the best time and the hardest. He is so adorable with all his new words, phrases and actions. He can imitate us just by seeing the slightest thing. {even the bad stuff!}
Here are a few of my favorites lately:
Whenever he sees words written, he immediately tells me that they say “Henry”
There are 4 songs he loves on the radio and asks for them back to back whenever we get in the car: Bang Bang, Boom Clap, Shake Shake and Cool Kids
He loves building train tracks and putting them together, more so than making the trains ride on the tracks. (Just like when I was little, my cousin and I would spend hours setting up our barbie houses and areas and then we would never play actual barbies).
Frozen is his favorite film. Sometimes when the days are long and I need a break, we watch it twice. He also loves Thomas, Noddy and Chica from the Sprout network.
His classic one liners lately are: “I naked”, “I cute”, “I swimming”
He loves to list his favorite things that he did recently, starting with “how about”. And he always makes it sound like a question (as in, did I really do that Mom?) It could be the friends in his class, what he ate that day, or an activity we did a week ago. My favorite is when he lists his breakfast (and he hasn’t actually eaten all of these things for breakfast): “how bout sausage? how bout eggs? how bout coffee? how bout fruit loops?” how bout water-a-melon?” (disclaimer … we do not feed him coffee)
He still loves to watch videos and look at pictures of himself. The side of our fridge is covered with Sticky Grams of just him and he will point at the pictures and tell me what he is doing “Henry sad, Henry night night, Henry playing”
This brings me to his next thing: he refers to himself in the 3rd person a lot, and especially when he has to go potty on the toilet. He tells us “Henry potty toilet” as if we were confused?

This must have been learned at school in the last few days, because when I ask him questions lately he answers “No, I didn’t.” He likes to answer that especially when I ask him if he has fed his dinner to the dogs, gone to the bathroom in his diaper (we’re potty training) and if he’s ready for lunch.

This is definitely the cutest stage he is in now (and also the hardest!) but I love all the things he is learning and how he is expressing himself.

A Monster Celebration

Henry turned two on Saturday. TWO. As much as I thought I’d be sad about him getting bigger, it wasn’t as hard as his first birthday. I felt happy. Happy that is he understanding more, happy that he is in such a cute stage, happy that he is learning so much and using more words. This is definitely the hardest stage and the cutest and I wouldn’t change it for anything 🙂 Last Friday we had a small party for him that included all his friends and their moms from my mom group. I wanted to keep it more low key this year and celebrate with family on a different day. It definitely went a lot smoother and was much more stress-free than his big first birthday party. I had some amazing help (our wonderful babysitter and my best friend/Henry’s godmother. Not to mention my husband who worked hard before work to set up the “pool” area). The theme was Monsters University since that has been Henry’s favorite movie for the past 8 months and we turned it into a toddler pool party. I found most of the decorations online (Party City, Oriental Trading) and the blue food baskets were from the dollar spot at Target (3 for $1); they were the perfect size to hold the kids food. We ended up having 15 kids including Henry and a teeny tiny newborn! We borrowed our friend Kelly’s water table and slide and a few other toys. The blow up pools are from Sam’s Club and Target. We also had chalk, bikes, toddler lawnmowers and a bunch of other toys. The kids had a great time and the party lasted about an hour and a half which was the perfect amount of time to visit and play.

Life with a Toddler

Henry and I had to run a few errands today after his morning nap. A few days ago he took a nasty fall on this poor little face and also skinned up his finger. His new favorite word is “boo-boo” (also the name for bandaids) so as soon as he wakes up he is asking for boo-boos. I wrapped a bandaid around his finger and off we went. While at the store Henry told me he needed this Mike Wazowski ballon (by telling me, he literally screamed for the whole store to hear). Afraid that someone would alert the cops for a potential kidnapping, I gave in and got him the ballon and checked out. While outside, the balloon came off the stick and the wind blew it across the whole parking. You would have thought that I just killed the family cat. With Henry screaming, I stood there for a second wishing the wind would blow it back to me but then came to my senses and realized it was just blowing it further away, in and out of cars. I grabbed Henry and walked for what seemed to be 5 minutes just to grab this damn balloon. Finally back in the car and headed to our last errand (which happened to involve driving on the highway), Henry decides that the bandaid on his finger must be killing him because he is throwing the biggest, most epic tantrum I have ever seen. Of course I cannot pull over because we are ON THE HIGHWAY so I have to suffer through this until I pull off at a QT and remove the tumor bandaid. While he was throwing his bandaid fit I had rolled down the window to distract him and forgot to roll it back up after we stopped. All seemed to be good once we got back on the road and wouldn’t you know it … that damn balloon flew out the window. And for a split second, I dreamed that we had a clothes line.

Easter Style

This past weekend we took Henry to see the Easter Bunny and I was fully prepared for a Santa-like meltdown. Suprisingly he had no problems with the giant bunny and we even got a smile. I don’t even think Henry realized he was sitting on a large bunny until the photographer was trying to get him to smile so the bunny put his big paw (?) on Henry’s arm. He looked at the paw, then up at his face, and then turned to the photographer and smiled. It was the cutest little “aha” moment.

I had no intention of matching Henry’s bow tie to the Easter Bunny’s but it does look awfully cute. I found the shirt and bow tie combo on Old Navy for under $20. The sleeves are still a tad long on him (he’s in 18-24 month) so I rolled them up which I think looked better. Henry is finally getting some hair in and I just love making a side part with it. He is following in my footsteps in the hair department. I was nearly bald until I was two and people thought I was a boy.
shirt with bow tie / jeans: old navy (sold out similar here) / shoes: polo from last fall, sold out.
We’re so excited to do an Easter Egg hunt this year and for Henry to find his basket from the bunny. I have it all stuffed and ready and will post soon on the goodies 🙂

Henry’s Food Adventures

This past weekend Henry got spoiled and ate a lot of yummy food. We wen’t to Moe’s where he love dipping his chips in sour cream and licking it off (gross) and had more black beans then I have ever seen him ingest (yay for protein!) We also had dinner with friends at Lee’s Bakery, a Vietnamese restaurant which was incredible. If you’re in the Atlanta area, I highly recommend trying this place out. The Vegetable Banh Mi was out of this world and we even got some sandwiches to go to eat for lunch on Sunday.  The prices are so cheap and I could definitely eat there everyday and not get sick of it. We also got the Avocado Smooth, Pork Banh Mi and Vegan Soup. My husband and I have been talking about it this whole week and making plans for when we go back. On Sunday morning we did some grocery shopping at Whole Foods and got Henry his own Green Lemonade this time. He devoured the whole thing, hardly taking any breaks and had threw a massive tantrum when it was all gone. I think juicing is in my future. Henry has been pretty picky lately about his food so I have been giving smoothies a try in hopes he will get his nutrients. So far they have all wound up in his stomach and not all over my kitchen floors.

Happy eating, friends!
