9/52

I just realized I forgot to show the week 9 portrait. Maybe it’s because March has snuck up on me. I always forgot how short February is.
“a portrait of my child, once a week, every week, in 2014.”
Henry: He is obsessed with taking off and putting back on his shoes. At least once a week I get a note from daycare saying something like “Henry didn’t want to play the drums, he would rather take his shoes off.”

Our Valentine’s Day Weekend

Like I mentioned on Friday, Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays. It’s a day to be reminded of how much we love our spouses, family and friends (and the red and pink hearts get me every year). I also despise when people say “oh that’s not a real holiday. It was made up by card companies” and blah blah blah. There is a lot behind Valentine’s Day which you can watch here if you’re so inclined 🙂 We started off Valentine’s Day with a sweet treat breakfast for Henry, consisting of a Target cupcake and pink milk and finished off the night with our traditional at home fondue, which we save for special occasions and actually hadn’t done it since last Valentine’s. My husband and I are pretty lucky that Henry is such a great sleeper and does a solid 12 hour stretch at night, from 6pm – 6am, giving us plenty of quality grown up time together to have dinner, talk, relax and have something on the TV other than Elmo.

For dinner Jan and I made our annual fondue. It’s becoming our tradition to celebrate Valentine’s Day at home with fondue and it makes things a hell of a lot easier (no running around, traffic, trying to get reservations or a sitter). We followed up the night with some Dutch Monkey Donuts Saturday morning and then packed up Henry and sent him to Grandma’s so we could have a night out and a morning of sleeping in (which by the way is really hard when you have a kitten attacking your feet and 2 dogs whining to go out). We went to a new restaurant in Buckhead called St. Cecilia. The food was amazing, which was to be expected and I can’t wait to go back and try the other items on their menu. We had the raw Yellowfin Tuna, Hearth Roasted Octopus, Cappelletti, Maine Sea Scallops and NY Strip. I recommend it all (especially the scallops!)

Monday night was our friend Hanna and Sam’s opening of their store Abby & Co. It was so fun to see everyone without having to chase toddlers around and have conversations without interrupted sentences and short answers, while making sure your child isn’t eating dog food or climbing on top of a table. Hanna and Sam did such an amazing job on the look of the store and selected the most adorable items for mommy, baby and even daddy too! If you’re in the Atlanta area, be sure to check them out!

I hope everyone has a great week! xo

Weekend Wrap Up

This weekend was jam packed but oh so fun. On Saturday we hosted our friends Joleen + Ben and their families and friends for their son Benjamin’s first birthday. The theme was vintage story book and the amount of detail Joleen put into each and every piece was amazing. From the invitations (in a little Golden Book), to the handmade banners from book pages, the cupcakes in a jar, etc. The color palette was beautiful and everything worked out wonderfully (it wasn’t too cold either). Be sure to head over to her blog where she will have tons more pictures and details about this fabulous birthday. Here are just a few snapshots I captured.

Henry’s outfit: Reversible Beanie  / Milk Drunk T / Harem Pants / Cardigan (Target last year) / Converse (Nordstrom Rack, similar here)
After the cleanup and when everyone left, we ordered some Chinese, made a fire, put some music on and had some family time. Henry’s new obsession is to climb onto and into everything so he spent the majority of the evening climbing in and out of his lego bucket. Sunday was an all day family day. We started the day with a fire and some yummy Paleo Chorizo Hash, then took Henry to Catch Air so he could run around and blow off some steam. After some Publix subs we all had nap time, then finished the day with an evening stroll around our neighborhood. I’m so lucky to have a husband who values family time as much as I do. It is really important to us to set aside time where we can go on adventures with Henry and really soak up this toddler time. Before we know it, he will be a tween and wan’t nothing to do with us (tear). PS: Tonight we busted out Henry’s Christmas jammies! I know it’s not even Thanksgiving yet, but Christmas is our favorite Holiday and we want it to last as long as it can.

I hope everyone had an amazing weekend! xo

Bone Marrow Soup

Okay okay, that sounds gross I know. I got all excited when I was making my soup and texted my mother only for her to text back “Ugh! That sounds disgusting!” But seriously, it’s delicious and so good for you (more on that later). I have been inspired lately by one of my friends and fellow mommy’s to start branching out on Henry’s diet and trying more food. Hanna is such an amazing cook and is always coming up with new and original recipes. (Henry and her daughter are similar in the fact that they can eat like nobody’s business). She has a wonderful blog where you can find all of her tasty creations here. One of the recipes she told me about was a bone marrow, radish and leek soup (Whole Foods did not have the type of radishes needed to they are omitted in this recipe). Leeks have a high amount of Vitamin K & A and are easier to digest than onions. Bone marrow is packed full of protein, calcium, and iron and is great for brain development. Read more about the benefits of Bone Marrow here and here

Step 1: Clean & Chop Leeks. Cut off the root of the leek and the very top green ends (which are usually torn). Separate each leaf from the stem, cut lengthwise and wash throughly. Leeks are very dirty and mine had a little bit of wet mud in between the the leaves. Once washed and patted dry with a paper towel, chop finely.

Step 2: Dice Onion. You will notice in my picture that my onion did not get chopped that finely. Mostly because I was tearing up so bad you would have thought I was watching Beaches and Steel Magnolias simultaneously. But it’s cool because we are just using them for flavor.

Step 3: Put all ingredients into crock pot and fill with water. Add in 6 cloves of garlic, salt and pepper. Cook on low for 8 + hours. The longer the better because the water will soak up all that marrow. I actually cooked mine for 14 hours.

Step 4: After cooking, drain in a fine mesh strainer or with cheese cloth. There should not be any chunks of meat, marrow, onion, etc. You only want the soup. (side note: I gave the bones to my doggies after they cooled).

Step 5: Serve as a soup or over rice. I poured the soup over rice and spoon fed it to Henry. He LOVED it (but really, there isn’t much this kid doesn’t like). I keep the soup in a tupperware container in the fridge and heat up when ready. I also freeze portions as well.

**You will know you have gotten all the marrow out of the bones if you soup congeals in the fridge.**

This will last all week and since Henry likes it so much, I am thinking about serving it to him daily. Another upside? This was super cheap to make. I bought all the ingredients for just under $17. Here is how the soup looked once it was in the fridge overnight, so you have a reference.

I hope your little ones like this as much as mine did! xo
