Some Link Love

I have been in full First Birthday mode (!!!!!) I am a little stressed about putting everything together and still getting items I need. I’m still in shock that my little baby will be ONE in 16 days. Seriously, this past year seems like a total blur … a dream that I just woke up from. I never knew how fast time went until I became a mother. I see all the pregnant momma’s and new momma’s and I just want to scream “Treasure every moment! It will be gone soon!” Okay, enough for my sappiness. We have a busy day tomorrow; Henry and I are walking with a new mommy friend and her daughter followed by a pool play date with lots of friends (as you know, Henry is obsessed with water). Atlanta is living up to it’s name with the hot days we’ve been having. I can only imagine how the rest of the summer will play out. Looks like lots of water pads, water parks and pools in our future. Here are some interesting/awesome/gross links I have found for you to entertain yourself with on this Tuesday evening 🙂

Must have wine/champagne tote

Make your own map necklace

This blogger gives amazing tips on holding a successful yard sale. Makes me want to go collect stuff to sell.

Just another reason to stay away from dairy
This is one of my favorite blogs, I love how honest she is. Married couples, read this!
I haven’t had coffee in 28 days (that is a long time when I would have 2 or 3 a day!) Coffee, cream or sweeteners are not Paleo friendly, but these homemade Mocha Chip Frappes sounds a-m-a-z-i-n-g. Maybe I can make them for Father’s Day and have a sip 🙂

Speaking of Father’s Day, I just heard of Dollar Shave Club. You MUST watch the video on their site here. Hysterical.

BBQ in a jar!!! My husband and I are obsessed with BBQ. We watch BBQ Pitmasters daily and have been talking about going to some championships to try out the goodness!

Five Things Friday – Shapes!

I love a good shape or pattern. Patterns are great inspiration when you need an idea for an outfit, how to redecorate a room, or accessorize your life. This hand stenciled tank is lightweight and perfect for summer (especially these Atlanta summers we have, gross). And seriously, $26 is NOT bad.
We have a busy weekend ahead of us. Today I am watching my friends sweet baby, tonight is my best friends birthday dinner, I have a baby shower tomorrow, then we’re having dinner with friends and their little boy! What does everyone have planned for the weekend?

Five Things Friday

My baby eats a lot. A LOT. More than any of the other babies in our play group. To keep him from messing up his clothes, I own about 50 + bibs. Not kidding. There is a bib for every occasion and every outfit. I’ve also recently bought a blw feeding bib too! I have a slight obsession with baby accessories … shoes, bibs, hats, pacifier clips. But hey, he’s my first so I love indulging! Here are some of my favorite bibs on Etsy right now. Enjoy! {I can’t believe tomorrow is June. Countdown to the first birthday begins …}

Weekend Wrap Up

I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day! Yay for 3 day weekends. Ours was definitely packed full of fun. The past few days was filled with cookouts, pool time, walks, play dates and a first birthday party. With as much excitement as Henry has had you’d think he’d be worn out and napping, but no. His naps have been so off this weekend. Very unlike my 3 times-a-day napper. I am hoping to return to our normal nap time schedule. This week/weekend is going to be very busy as well; including my first Cross Fit class. IAMSONERVOUS!! I’ll keep you posted on how that turns out …

Five Things Friday – Father’s Day!

Okay, more like Five Things Saturday. Yesterday got away from me. Typical.
I am more excited about Father’s Day than I was about Mother’s Day. I love celebrating someone else’s day and making them feel special. This year I will be getting my husband something he could really use (I love the canvas lunch bag, especially since we have both been eating healthier and taking our lunch to work). Oh and those BBQ spices … that is a must!
The hubby has been away for business and came home last night. I made this yummy cocktail for my hard working man! Side note – add more lemon!
We are headed to a group cookout and can’t wait to see everyone. I hope you all have a great and safe holiday weekend!

2. Your Child’s Artwork Personalized Key Chain – $25 (I am definitely getting this next year!)

Whole Milk vs. Almond Milk for Toddlers

I recently switched to eating only a Paleo diet. I don’t want to call it a diet because it really is a lifestyle change.  (I will do a more in depth blog post on that later with the reason for the switch and a ton of informative links). One of the food groups that is eliminated in Paleo is dairy. In the extensive research I have done on dairy, it made me think about Henry and alternative milk substitutes for toddlers, even though I hate to think of my soon to be one year old as a toddler. When babies turn a year old, the American Academy of Pediactrics recommends the stop of formula and the start of whole milk. **This does not particularly apply to breast fed babies, as a lot of mothers choose to breast feed past a year, which is still viewed as best for baby** Henry had to switch to formula at 5 weeks because I got a breast infection which stopped my milk supply. He has since been on Similac Advance and loves it.
There are quiet a few options out there for a milk substitute; coconut milk, rice milk, almond milk, hemp milk, soy milk, oat milk, goats milk  … but the one I am leaning towards the most as an alternative is Almond Milk.  If you want to learn more about the many benefits of oats, check out this article named, The Health Benefits of Eating Porridge Oats for Breakfast.
Almond milk is a great substitute however there is not that much protein in it (1 gram per serving compared to the 8 grams in whole milk). But it is low in calories, at only 40 calories per eight ounce serving, and low in fat. It contains only three grams of fat per eight ounce serving. Almond milk is lactose, gluten, casein and cholesterol free; it’s also free of saturated fats. Henry eats tons of vegetables and meats, so protein isn’t really a problem in his diet. Same with vitamin D and calcium … there are plenty of leafy greens, fish and meats, etc. You may be thinking “shouldn’t young children avoid nuts?” Yes, this is true, but it’s mostly peanuts that are worrisome. Also, Henry has never had an allergic reaction to any food I have given him, even foods high on the allergy list. At this age kids really need the fat that is in milk in order for their brains and nervous systems to develop properly, but there are fats in many of the other foods Henry eats (avocados, coconut oil mixed in his purees, salmon, eggs).
Here is a great link with more information.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on whole milk and milk alternatives!
