Rainy Weekend and Fun Links

Shocker, it’s still raining in Atlanta. Yesterday the rain broke for a bit so we were able to get out and do some things and tonight we are going to our friends house for Korean BBQ! I’ll post pictures and a recap tomorrow. I hope everyone has had a great weekend so far and here are some fun links from around the web:

Fourth of July!

Today was a much needed day off. With home projects, family in town and Henry’s birthday festivities last weekend, we were stressed to the max. Not to mention my husband has been working around the clock getting the new Sugarboo + Co. store ready to open (only to come home and help with more projects I needed done for the party). We’re so thankful for him and all his hard work <3 <3 <3 <3

We had some friends and their babies over to celebrate with us. Despite the rain and storms it was a success and everyone had a good time. I still had some decorations left over from Henry’s birthday so we set up the sunroom again with some of his new birthday toys for the babies to play with. My favorite detail of the day was some old school red, white and blue popsicles in some champagne that I saw on Pinterest here. So yummy but VERY sweet! One nice thing about hanging out with other parents is that we start functions early and end them early. Far cry from the old days where we would stay out late on a work night and be hungover and tired the next morning. It was nice to enjoy our day and our friends and still be in bed by our normal time. I hope everyone had a safe and fun Fourth of July!

Henry Turns ONE

Henry’s first birthday was definitely a labor of love. I started planning the party back in January thinking I had all the time in the world but man did those months fly by. Luckily we finished our sun room about 4 days before the party and I had friends come over to help set up a few days in advance. BEST DECISION ever! I strongly recommend doing as much setting up prior to the morning of the party (if possible). Luckily the party was at our house so there were not any issues that prohibited us from doing this. We got tables set up, goody bags and center pieces made, streamers cut, signs hung, etc. That made it very easy to make a list of last minute things to do the morning of (blow up balloons, make and set out food, get drinks ready, clean up, etc). I am so grateful for everyone that helped out with his party. My best friend (and Henry’s God Mother) took amazing photos and made his beautiful chalkboard sign, I borrowed supplies and tables from friends, and had plenty of help the day of. The rain held off and the temperature was in the low 80’s, there was plenty of space for the 16 babies and 43 adults, and we had tons of food left over (cake, not so much, we nearly ate it all). This was not only a birthday party but a celebration of the first year of life. All that us mommy’s daddy’s go through, the milestones of our babies, and the “we made it!” sign of relief. Thanks so all of our family and friends for sharing this beautiful day with us. We would not be here without you all. xoxo

ONE year old thoughts

I cannot believe this tiny baby is a year old. I remember the picture above like it was yesterday. My sweet baby, who I waited 39 weeks to meet, was finally here. He stopped crying as soon as they brought him to me. He was perfect in every way possible. I couldn’t have dreamed of a better baby. My life never felt complete until that moment I saw him for the first time and things finally made sense. I knew why I was put on this Earth. My husband and I were talking recently about how short a year is. 365 days is really not that long. Days blend together and turn into weeks … and before you know it you are taking another months picture. I can remember when Henry was just a few weeks old and we’d be out in public, other mother’s would tell us how old their child was and how fast it all goes. They weren’t kidding. I look back at this year, and although I remember most of everything, it all seems like one big blur. His first birthday has come and gone, the party is over, family leaves to go home and things return to normal. How bittersweet and emotional it all is. My baby is turning into a little boy in front of my eyes. He walks instead of crawls, drinks from a straw instead of a bottle, drinks almond milk instead of formula and can eat a hamburger like nobody’s business. I thank God for every single day I have spent as his mother and will be eternally grateful that He chose me to raise this beautiful person.

Homemade Smash Cake … Semi Fail

For some reason I always have an overly confident approach when it comes to crafts/recipes/etc that I see on Pinterest or my favorite blogs. Take this one for example … Mini Cakes DIY. Baking a cake in a tin can … sounds easy enough right? Wrong. I followed this recipe to a T and my cakes did not come out looking as pretty as hers. The only thing I changed was I used different cakes; yellow cake, chocolate cake and strawberry cake (hoping to make it extra pretty). Fail. I could hardly get my cakes to come out of the can, they baked with a hollow hole and I had to double the time because they were not baking properly. After almost an hour in the oven, I finally said F it and took them out (surprisingly they were done). I let them cool in the can for 40 minutes and then took them out. All were good except the strawberry, almost all my layers crumbled and disintegrated. Who knew cake could do that.
I finally collected all the good layers and started the frosting. What. A. Nightmare. I ended up losing one stack in an avalanche, leaving me with 2 lonely cake stacks. I don’t like even numbers and there is just something about that odd number that really gets me. I decided to do the third stack in a square and it was a lot easier. I was finally confident in how my cakes looked, and then came the car ride. We literally pulled into the location and there was a huge dip in the road and 2 of them slid apart. At that point I figured Henry could just eat cakes that were already smashed. Luckily our photographer was able to hold and fix the cakes and make them look oh so pretty. One of the fellow moms in my mommy group took our photos and she did an incredible job and made the process so fun (even though it was only 10am and we were all sweating bullets). See her beautiful pictures and read her fun blog over at Love, Joleen Photography. Below are a few teasers and I cannot wait to see the rest!

Current Obsession – Land of Nod

Seriously, Land of Nod? Why must you have the most adorable products for kids. I’d love to have everything on their site for myself Henry, especially that Teepee and Wall Mounted Zebra Head. {Side note, I am going to have a one year old in 4 days. Where did the time go?}

Father’s Day Weekend

I had to forgo Five Things Friday this week (sad face). I’ve been so busy and our weekend was jam packed. I spent Friday running errands and organizing things for Father’s Day and Henry’s birthday party. Friday evening we went out to dinner with friends at Eclipse de Luna. They have the best tapas and it’s great for groups. (My favorites are the Fried Goat Cheese with Caramelized Onions & Honey and the Spiced Potatoes with Romesco). We had a nightcap at Twisted Taco and I made sure to take it easy (unlike my previous Friday night. Yikes).

We decided last week to finally re do our sunroom and started the project on Saturday. We removed the yucky 15 year old green carpet and began painting the walls. We chose a high gloss white which will open up the room along with new hardwood floors made with 12 inch boards and a nice dark stain. The deadline for this project is June 25th … wish us luck!
After painting on Saturday we headed over to our friends house in Candler Park to have some brunch. It was amazing. Our sweet hosts made such a great spread and we had a wonderful time catching up. They already have an adorable dog and cat and just got a kitten too. The kitten was fascinated by Henry and would stalk/follow him around the whole time.

After our brunch date we went hope and napped for a few hours and then had a park picnic with some friends and their babies. Our babies are getting to the age where it is almost impossible to take them to a non baby proofed place. Meaning, there needs to be barricades to keep them corraled. The hubby and I have really bonded with these friends and are so grateful to have them in our lives.

Our Father’s Day was pretty low key. When hubs woke up I had some coffee and donuts ready for him. (Side note: We both eat a Paleo diet but Jan wanted to have a cheat day). I had a large breakfast spread planned which he loved and was totally surprised (thank you pinterest!) We lounged all day, watched soccer games, Law & Order SVU, napped and just enjoyed not having to do anything but play and be lazy. I made fruit & donut skewers, Bacon Cheddar Pancake Bites, Eggs and (more) Bacon, Orange Pecan French Toast and Mimosa’s. I covered the dining room table with craft paper and wrote my favorite memory from the past year and did some other doodles. I even stamped Henry’s chubby hand print too 🙂 Henry also had his first taste of a Krispy Kreme donut … he loved it. Shocking.
I hope everyone had a great weekend and Happy Father’s Day to all the daddy’s out there!
xo,
Chanel
