Five Things Friday – Vintage Finds

I have always been a fan of vintage and antique items and I am most certain it comes from my grandmother (one of the many things her and I have in common). I’ve always been more of an “old soul” and have dreamt about what it would be like to live in the roaring ’50s. Since time traveling doesn’t exist, I’ll just buy old junk (as my husband likes to refer to my vintage finds). I don’t know about you, but it’s the best feeling walking into an antique store and coming out with something that has such a history behind it and that’s been around longer than you have. I just love how much character antique furniture items have! My friend recently bought some antique chess tables for her house and they look amazing. They add so much character to her house and I’m quite tempted to buy one myself!! I love mixing old and new, vintage and modern. If you don’t have any good local antique markets near you, Etsy and Ebay are filled with amazing finds. All the ones below are from Etsy. I am diggin’ on arrows lately so had to include them in this weeks roundup 🙂

H&M!

You guys! H&M is finally selling their clothes on line! You have no idea how happy this makes me. I love everything about their store and clothes. It’s good quality for a great price, plus their styles are so cute. I particularly love their baby and kids line, because come on, who doesn’t love a little boy in a Mr. Rodgers cardigan? There is way more of a selection online than in the stores (another reason why I am super excited because not every H&M store carries the baby and kids line). Head on over to their site and check out all the amazing clothes, plus shipping was just $6! I nearly had a heart attach when one of my girlfriends texted me this morning saying they opened up online ordering to the US. Total panic mode, as if this was a flash sale and I would miss out on all the cute stuff. Luckily it’s all still there 🙂

Life is a Gift

I recently saw this quote on Facebook and teared up while reading it. This really put things in perspective and is a good reminder to be humble and grateful for all that you have. Ever since I became a mother my views on other people have changed for the better. I am more empathetic to those who are struggling or sad, I find myself letting go of things easier, when I say my prayers at night, I pray for God to comfort those who are hurting and in need. For those people who are currently struggling, learning about the vital information inscribed with the 555 Angel Number can be a huge difference-maker in your life, perhaps even a turning point.
It’s funny how your whole outlook on life changes when you have a child. God wants me to be a better person for Henry and it took this new being to come into my life for me to change. Being a mother is such a wonderful blessing and has brought my life such meaning. I rarely think of my pre-baby life, as if Henry has always been apart of me. Every now and then these little fleeting moments creep up and I am just in awe of my sweet boy and how is he growing. When he gives me a look after I ask him a question, and I know he understands. Or how he gets so excited when he holds his favorite fox stuffed animal and runs around the room squealing with joy. It’s amazing how this 13 month old baby is growing into a little boy. He looks to me when he is hungry, frustrated and sad. He looks to me when he is happy as if wanting to share the moment with me. He is my everything. He completed me as a human and has made me a better person. He is better than I ever dreamt and I thank God every day for choosing me to be his mother.

Weekend Wrap Up + Cupcakes!

BRAVOS! Friday night the hubby and I went to the Braves game with my mom and step dad. He has season tickets so it’s always such a treat to see the players and enjoy a game so close (he has front row at the 3rd base line!) This is a rarity for us and we definitely enjoyed our night out; filling up on chili dogs, fries, beer and more. Live sporting events never get old and since we don’t go all the time, we are able to appreciate when we do. Plus, the Braves ended up winning. Double Fun. We got home pretty late and didn’t go to bed until after midnight (who are we??) Henry let us sleep in by a whole 30 minutes though! Can I even call a 6:30am wake up call sleeping in? I was definitely looking forward to his morning nap so I could get some shut eye.

{with my little brother}

Saturday evening we went over to our friends house for dinner. They were so sweet and made homemade pizzas for us all, which were incredible! I couldn’t come empty handed so I decided to make  cupcakes. I went off this basic recipe since I didn’t have any milk in the house. I followed it exactly except I cut it in half and made 12 cupcakes. They were all even colored and height which rarely happens when I bake. I wanted to add a little pizazz to the presentation so I made these adorable (and easy) cupcake flags. I used regular tooth picks and washi tape. Just cut a piece of tape, place toothpick in the center of the tape, then fold in half, pressing down near the toothpick so the tape is flat.

To make 12 cupcakes, you will need:
1/2 cup butter
3 eggs
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups flower
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
1 teaspoon vanilla (I did not half this. I love vanilla and it wasn’t overwhelming)
*I also left out the lemon extract*

The original recipe says to bake for an hour, I baked for 45 minutes and probably could have done 40. Set a timer at 35 minutes and check before adding more time.

Remove from cupcake pan and set on cooling rack. Let cool at least an hour before frosting. I actually waited a few hours to frosting mine because I had to run out and get a few ingredients.

Now here comes the fun part! FROSTING! This is THE best frosting recipe that my mother and grandmother have been using for years. It’s actually from an old Proctor and Gamble baking book that my grandmother still has. The nice thing about this recipe is that you can make to your preference. All you do is start with equal parts unsalted soft butter and crisco. I used 4 tablespoons of each, then added half a bag of confectioners sugar and heavy whipping cream, while mixing them all with my hand mixer. Add the cream in moderation since you do not need that much. I also add a few drops of vanilla since I love the flavor. I bought some gel food coloring at Target to make teal and pink frosting. I prefer the gel coloring because it makes the frosting brighter and you only need a few drops so it lasts forever.

The finished product! At the last minute we passed by the candy aisle and I saw some Swedish Fish. I thought they would be so cute on the cupcakes and people would not expect to see them on there. I stuck my toothpick flag through the fish and then into the cupcake so they would stay in place.

Here’s a few snapshots of Saturday night

Sunday we did some cleaning, shopping and watched the soccer game (GO USA!) The hubby grilled some bratwursts and cooked up some peppers and onions to make a friggin’ awesome brat sandwich. We also went to a nearby park to spend some time outside with Henry and took a few pictures, I’ll share some of those later because there are so many cute ones. I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Five Things Friday

I am loving all things wood lately. Especially one of a kind pieces that makes each one a work of art. Wood pieces can fit in almost every decor and add an organic Earthy element to your home.  They add character without being too over the top. I especially love the engraved bowling set which would make a great gift for a little boy. Also, those pink and maple shades? I may need those to wear around San Francisco 🙂 I hope everyone has a fun and safe weekend planned. xx

Weekender Bags

With our San Francisco trip right around the corner, I have been in search of the perfect carry on bag for my laptop, books and other purse necessities. When I travel I hate taking multiple bags with me on the plane. A large one that can fit all my junk is the way to go. I always have the following in my purse: hand sanitizer, phone, make up bag, wallet, Wet Ones wipes, pen and paper, breath mints, baby wipes, a few diapers and baby snacks. Since this trip is an early anniversary trip for my husband and me, the last 3 items on that list won’t be needed. In place of them will be my camera, laptop, current book club read, phone and chargers. While I am nervous about flying and sad about leaving my baby, I am excited to spend some quality time with my hubby and explore a new city! Plus, it’s a reason to buy a new great bag. Below are some of my favorites and I would love to have all of them. Do you have any weekend bags that you love or recommend? I’d love to hear about them!

my life in pictures (lately)

This past weekend was jam packed. We went to 3 birthday parties and had a friend over for dinner Friday.  Jan made this yummy pasta dish which I highly recommend if you want to have a cheat meal.  It was even better the next day when all the flavors could really blend together. We also celebrated two first birthday girls and my grandmother’s birthday with family. In other news, Sugarboo Designs and Sugarboo & Co. finally got Instagram accounts! Be sure to follow them for upcoming events, new products and shop announcements! @sugarboodesigns and @sugarbooandco
Let’s recap, shall we? A few pictures from the past few weeks.
