DIY Car Survival Kit for under $40

This post is sponsored by Pepperidge Farm but the content and opinions expressed here are my own.

Our family has been traveling a ton since February and all the trips have been lengthy car rides. Needless to say, I’m pretty much an expert when it comes to packing the necessities for any road trip. I’ve also traveled enough to know what not to bring with us (pillows, large toys, stuffed animals) and today I wanted to share the best DIY Car Survival Kit for any road trip.

We have a Toyota Sienna Mini Van which is super spacious and perfect for driving long distances. To steer clear of clutter I keep an organizer hanging on the back of our third row. It’s stocked with pull ups/diapers for Evelyn, changes of clothes for both kids, pajamas, sunscreen, bug spray, water, wet wipes, a first aid kit and some other essentials in case of an emergency. I use this trunk organizer to keep everything together in one place. I love that there are different stretchy pockets for each member of the family. It has adjustable straps and fits to all vehicles. The best part is that it’s under $15 so you don’t have to spend a fortune on car organization!

In addition to the necessities above, I also hit up the dollar store for some inexpensive coloring books, crayons, mini figurines and other small toys to keep in the trunk organizer. This way when we are traveling these are new to the kids so they don’t get bored.

Snacks are a must when going anywhere with kids. My kids don’t eat a ton of packaged snacks at home and we save them for occasions when we really need them (like waiting for a table at a restaurant). I like to buy new foods when we go on road trips to peek their interest and keep them occupied for a while. When choosing snacks for a car ride, be sure to purchase dry snacks. Nothing liquid or sticky because it will inevitably get all over their carseat and clothing. My kids are obsessed with Goldfish Cheddar crackers.  The multipacks are my favorite because they are already portioned out which means no overeating or extra prep work for me. Goldfish Crackers are always baked with real cheese and free or artificial flavors and preservatives. If you’re needing some inspiration for snack ideas, head over to the Goldfish Pinterest page and their YouTube page for so many fun ideas. I hope you find these essentials helpful for your next road trip! What are some of your travel must-haves?

Two Must-Do Activities on Jekyll Island

With the warm weather hitting Jekyll Island, there are so many outdoor activities to enjoy. We were lucky enough to experience a little bit of everything, but the two that were our absolute favorites were the Gatorology 101 class and riding bikes around the island.

For those that know me in real life know that I have huge fear of alligators. HUGE. So taking part in a Gatorology 101 class, I had no idea what to expect (Spoiler: I came out alive). We met our guide – one of Jekyll Island’s wildlife researchers – at the observation deck at Horton Pond which is right across from Driftwood Beach. It’s a secluded and peaceful spot, but you should know that about 3-5 alligators are living in that pond at all times, so please be cautious if exploring on your own. My husband and I loved learning about all the conservation work done by the Jekyll Island Authority to Horton Pond over the past few years and the kids had so much fun with the hands-on parts of the class. From an alligator claw to an alligator skull, there was plenty of fun things that kept the kids’ attention. However, our teacher saved the best for last. We got to meet a 4-year-old alligator named Tiny. I have to admit; she was super cute and so calm that I wasn’t afraid of her at all. We got to pet and hold her and seeing an actual alligator that close was incredible. I highly recommend this class to anyone who visits Jekyll Island.

As I mentioned in my previous post, the weather over Spring Break could not have been better. With cool breezes and no humidity, being outdoors was terrific. Another activity which we got to experience altogether was bike riding. The Jekyll Island Bike Barn (located by the Mini Golf and Playgrounds) rents adult and kid-sized bikes, tricycles, tandem bikes, two- and four-person surreys, bike trailers, and dual trikes. Now even though there are plenty of bikes to choose from, we decided on a family bike that could hold all of us comfortably. Henry still needs training wheels on his bike and Evelyn hasn’t learned how to ride solo yet. Our kids obviously weren’t old enough to help pedal, but it wasn’t too hard with just my husband and I doing the work. You’re allowed to take the bikes all over the island (except for the beach) and enjoy them throughout the whole day. With more than 20 miles of paths and trails, Jekyll Island is very bike friendly and a great way to get a scenic tour of the island. You can even bring your own electric bicycle and tour the island. If you or someone you love has been injured in a bicycle accident, call a bicycle accident lawyer at Cellino Law for a free and confidential appointment.

I hope you loved hearing about our trip as much as I loved recapping it for you! If you follow me on Instagram, @chanelvanreenen, you can see more of our trip on the highlights reel in my profile. Be sure to check out Jekyll Island if you’re in need of an amazing family vacation spot! Activities change by season so there are always new and exciting things to experience. You can see them all and plan your trip here!

Cinco de Mayo Pretzel Bar

This post is sponsored by SUPERPRETZEL® Soft Pretzels Products and SheKnows Media

With Cinco de Mayo just a few days away, I thought it would be fun to shake things up and serve something a bit different on this festive holiday. Going out to enjoy holidays has definitely changed over the years, especially since our kids can be a little wild. Instead, we celebrate at home with friends, yummy food, drinks, and music. It’s nice because we can schedule gatherings around nap time and bedtime. For this fun Cinco de Mayo tablescape, I wanted to create a snack bar that had a bit more substance than your usual chips and salsa, and wanted it to be family-friendly!

SUPERPRETZEL Soft Pretzels are my go-to for delicious, easy to make snacks. They’re great for after school, sleepovers, and movie nights. They are fully baked soft pretzels which and take only seconds to prepare. Since they’re frozen, you don’t have to worry about them sitting out on the counter going bad and can heat up as many or as few as you need to. Salt packs are included which is super convenient because, in my experience, regular salt does NOT taste like pretzel salt. I knew SUPERPRETZEL Soft Pretzels would be the perfect centerpiece item for this spread. They taste amazing dipped in fresh guacamole, salsa, queso and even with fresh lime juice squeezed over them. My husband built this adorable pretzel holder out of 1/2″ PVC pipe which I spray painted a dark bronze. I used shower curtain hooks and black and white bakers twine to hang the pretzels. What I love about this tablescape is that it definitely can be done on a budget and you can buy everything premade. I don’t have a ton of free time to make my own cheese dip or guacamole, so if I can buy something already made, I’m all over it!

In addition to the classic pretzel twists, SUPERPRETZEL also makes a Softstix Cheddar Cheese Filled Soft Pretzel Stick which has become a household staple. The kids love to snack on them after school and I love the convenience. For a limited time, you can save $0.50 off SUPERPRETZEL Original 6 count. Click here to download the coupon (desktop only).

Why Small Batch Dresses are my Favorite

I first found Holley + Sage over two years ago via Instagram when I was looking for Easter dresses. I immediately fell in love with every handmade piece and appreciated the fact that the company is US based. Supporting small shops, most of whom are run by mothers or young women, is also extremely important to me so I don’t mind investing in limited edition clothing or accessories that can be passed down to my grandchildren one day. Each of Holley + Sage’s pieces are released in small drops and once the items sell out, they’re gone. When I saw this floral Liberty of London floral dress, I knew Evelyn had to have it for this Spring and Summer. The material is ultra lightweight and it was the perfect Easter dress. I paired it with my favorite clogs from Old Navy, which by the way I buy every year because they are such a staple shoe in Evelyn’s closet. Today they are 40% off too!

If you’re looking for a similar dress to the one Evelyn is wearing, there is a summer version that can be found here. The sleeves are to die for and this is the perfect heirloom dress. Be sure to follow Holley + Sage on Instagram to stay in the loop about upcoming collections and drops. Happy Monday!

Why Your Family Needs to Visit Jekyll Island

One of the things I love most about living in Atlanta is the proximity it is to so many drivable destinations in the South. Last week we made the 5-hour drive from North Atlanta to Jekyll Island. We had never been together as a family and were so excited to experience it together! Aside from the miles of unspoiled beaches, there is an array of family-friendly activities all over the island. Once you come to Jekyll, you never have to leave because everything you need is right there. We visited Jekyll Island the second half of Spring Break week, and while there were a lot of families in town, it never felt crowded, and we never had a long wait anywhere we went. There is also plenty of convenient parking throughout the island. The entire atmosphere of Jekyll Island is warm and laid back. From locals to tourists, everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful.

From all-day bike rentals to a Gatorology 101 class, Jekyll Island is chock full of endless activities year-round. One of our favorite activities was visiting the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, which is the only sea turtle education and rehabilitation facility in the state. We were able to learn about sea turtles and see rehabilitation in action with interactive exhibits and experiences. The kids loved watching the turtles swim in their “hot tubs” which were actually small pools for each one. We ran into some rain on Saturday, so the Sea Turtle Center was perfect for keeping two young children entertained.

Mini Golf, Playgrounds, and Bike Rentals are all conveniently located in the same area. Henry, who will be six this summer, loved mini golf the best. Evelyn (3) couldn’t quite get the hang of it, so she played on the slides and swings while the boys went through the mini-golf course. Also another benefit of having those right next to each other!

There is no shortage of delicious restaurants all over the island. A few we tried were The Wharf, Corsair, McCormicks Grill, Wee Pub Beach, The Jekyll Market, and Red Bug Motors Pizza. No matter where we ate or what we tried, the food everywhere was excellent. From sweet French toast in the morning to juicy barbeque in the evening, Jekyll Island knows how to make a delicious meal.

We were lucky enough to experience two unique properties while on the island. Jekyll Ocean Club and Jekyll Island Club Resort. Both properties are well maintained, and the grounds are beautiful. We stayed in Crane Cottage at the Jekyll Island Club and it was absolutely breathtaking and perfect for families. Crane Cottage is separate from the main clubhouse and was once the winter retreat of Richard T. Crane, founder of Crane Plumbing. The room we were actually in is where brides and their wedding party get ready before walking into the courtyard to get married! Another fun fact about the Jekyll Island Club is that the Federal Reserve was formed there under the guidance of Senator Nelson Aldrich. Jekyll Island Club is a member of Historic Hotels in America and dates back to 1887.

If having full beach days are a must for you, then the Jekyll Ocean Club is where you want to be. Just steps away from the ocean, you won’t have to go far for that out of office life. The on-site restaurant, Corsair, has the most amazing goat cheese hush puppies you will ever eat!

I honestly can’t say enough good things about our little vacation together, and the kids keep talking about how much fun they had. I’ll be highlighting the bike rentals and Gatorology 101 class next week, so stay tuned to hear more about our two favorite activities!

Easy Snacks for Mommy’s Little Helper

This post is sponsored by Happy Family Yogurt but the content and opinions expressed here are my own.

Over the past 2 years I’ve had the amazing opportunity of working from home while both kids are in school full time. Since Henry is in Kindergarten he is gone most of the day and Evelyn goes to an amazing preschool near our house for 4 hours each day. Both kids know that mommy’s office is off limits unless I’m in there and Evelyn especially loves to come in and play dress up with all of my things. After I pick Evelyn up from school I usually let her hang out with me for some one-on-one time before she goes down for nap. The one room she always asks to go into is my office and she’ll say “Mommy, can we go in your office and snuggle?” which really means “Can I go in and touch every single items I see 267 times?”

To keep Evelyn occupied while I wrap up work in the afternoon, I always have to have snacks around to distract her. I try to keep easy to eat fruits on hand at all times in addition to her favorite yogurt pouches that can be eaten without making a mess. I love that all Happy Family products are made with whole milk which contains vitamin D, they’re non-GMO, certified USDA Organic, and made with probiotics to help little tummies work properly. There’s an assortment of flavors and Evelyn loves them all equally. You can stock up on all Happy Family Yogurts at your local Walmart and be sure to get the Ibotta offer before you go!

What are your go-to snacks when you have little ones at home? Have you stocked up on any Happy Family yogurts yet?

Pretty Good Mother

There is one thing I am not ashamed to admit: I’m just an okay mom, and I’m okay with that. Motherhood has never been enough for me. I’ve always wanted more out of life, in addition to raising children and being a mother. I’ve always loved working, nurturing great friendships with my girlfriends, being creative, and having alone time. As much as I love my children, I equally love being away from them, and that is okay to admit. When it comes to my kids, they’re not perfect and they’re not good all the time [I wrote about this last year]. They run wild, throw tantrums, and basically disregard anything I say. But overall, they’re pretty good kids. They’re independent, stand their ground, and are confident. As a parent, you have your savings and an experienced checking account. So, it’s time to start saving for your child’s future with The Children’s ISA tax-free savings until their 18th birthday, visit https://thechildrensisa.com/ for more details.

So to all the mama’s out there who are just an okay mother with okay kids: love yourself. Say it proudly because life is hard, parenting is hard, and we’re all just trying to make it through each day. You’re doing a pretty good job, and that’s okay.

Now onto what we’re wearing! My smocked waist gingham skirt is from Target and literally so comfy. No buttons or zippers and fits like a dream. You can eat 13 tacos and still look good in it. Our tee’s are from one of my favorite small shops, Bee & Mae (kids tee/mom tee). They make the softest shirts and I’ve been a fan since I found their shop a few months ago on Instagram. You can see a few others here, here, and here. Happy Monday!
