Our Valentine’s Day Weekend

Like I mentioned on Friday, Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays. It’s a day to be reminded of how much we love our spouses, family and friends (and the red and pink hearts get me every year). I also despise when people say “oh that’s not a real holiday. It was made up by card companies” and blah blah blah. There is a lot behind Valentine’s Day which you can watch here if you’re so inclined 🙂 We started off Valentine’s Day with a sweet treat breakfast for Henry, consisting of a Target cupcake and pink milk and finished off the night with our traditional at home fondue, which we save for special occasions and actually hadn’t done it since last Valentine’s. My husband and I are pretty lucky that Henry is such a great sleeper and does a solid 12 hour stretch at night, from 6pm – 6am, giving us plenty of quality grown up time together to have dinner, talk, relax and have something on the TV other than Elmo.

For dinner Jan and I made our annual fondue. It’s becoming our tradition to celebrate Valentine’s Day at home with fondue and it makes things a hell of a lot easier (no running around, traffic, trying to get reservations or a sitter). We followed up the night with some Dutch Monkey Donuts Saturday morning and then packed up Henry and sent him to Grandma’s so we could have a night out and a morning of sleeping in (which by the way is really hard when you have a kitten attacking your feet and 2 dogs whining to go out). We went to a new restaurant in Buckhead called St. Cecilia. The food was amazing, which was to be expected and I can’t wait to go back and try the other items on their menu. We had the raw Yellowfin Tuna, Hearth Roasted Octopus, Cappelletti, Maine Sea Scallops and NY Strip. I recommend it all (especially the scallops!)

Monday night was our friend Hanna and Sam’s opening of their store Abby & Co. It was so fun to see everyone without having to chase toddlers around and have conversations without interrupted sentences and short answers, while making sure your child isn’t eating dog food or climbing on top of a table. Hanna and Sam did such an amazing job on the look of the store and selected the most adorable items for mommy, baby and even daddy too! If you’re in the Atlanta area, be sure to check them out!

I hope everyone has a great week! xo

Like many of you have heard, the south was hit pretty bad with an ice and snow storm this past week. Luckily no one was stranded in their cars this time and for the most part everyone was home safe, including us. Henry is fascinated by the snow and I am so glad he’s been able to experience it twice this year. Thank God it’s melting because cabin fever with a toddler is no joke.

Henry: My little explorer. Also, could this outfit be any cuter on him? I wish my legs looked that good in leggings.

Five Things Friday

Happy Valentine’s Day! Today is one of my favorite days of the year. I think mostly it’s because all the decorations and food are centered around red, pink and hearts. I have indulged in plenty of red/pink/hearts and unfortunately I have pushed all this on Henry, so I hope he will not grow to hate it (for the sake of girls out there). Tomorrow I’ll share his yummy “breakfast” and the Valentines he I made for his friends.
I am currently loving comfy and simple items (hence the socks, backpack and salve) but that camera strap scarf has been on my wish list for weeks (particularly my Valentine’s Day wish list) … let’s see if I get it 🙂
The snow and ice are finally thawing in Atlanta which should make for a nice weekend, hopefully outdoors since cabin fever struck us hard again these past few days. I hope everyone has a safe and fun Valentine’s Day!

I couldn’t resist picking a photo from our recent mini session with our friend Joleen from Love, Joleen photography. She always captures the best pictures of Henry! Her attention to detail is phenomenal. Henry’s outfit details can be found here and his bow tie is from Lemons & Cream

Henry saw his first snow this week and we had 2 1/2 days off of work/preschool. We did a lot of relaxing and spending time together. This picture sums up how excited Henry was to see snow. He was so mesmerized and bewildered all at the same time. He just stood there smiling, finally walking around after a few minutes, but even then his steps were cautious and careful. It is so much fun to see things through your child’s eyes.

snowpocalypse ’14

Yesterday Atlanta was shut down due to an ice storm and the fact that a million people got on the road at virtually the same time. I was one of those people. It was one of the most mentally exhausting days of my life. I have never felt so helpless.
Here is a breakdown of how my day went:

It started snowing around 12pm
At 12:30pm, a delivery driver came into work and said his truck was spinning out on the road and it was getting bad. People were getting calls from family members saying the same thing, co-workers were coming back early from lunch because the roads were slick.
1:30pm – we made the decision to leave work and head home
3:40pm – I arrived to pick up Henry at daycare. It took me 2 hours to go 2.39 miles
3:45pm – Henry and I leave his daycare and head out towards Old Milton Parkway.
5:45pm – We moved 1.21 miles in 2 hours. The traffic was at a gridlock. There literally was no where to go. If cars did move, it was the ones coming off of the highway onto Old Milton or turning from other streets, basically getting in front of the cars just sitting there helplessly watching (including me). By this time, Henry has finished his movie on the iPad, had missed dinner and was freaking out. Crying, yelling, screaming. He wanted out. He needed a diaper change. He needed to run around and he needed food.
6:00pm – My phone dies. I have no way of getting in touch with my husband or my mom, who I had been communicating with. Our last correspondence was that I would try to get to a hotel and stay there until this passed.
6:05pm – I stop at the first hotel I see. They are booked. I start crying along with Henry in front of the hotel receptionist. I call my husband from their phone and tell him the news. I tell him I am going to keep trying. After all, I am less than 7 miles away.
6:10pm – I get back on Old Milton and as to be expected, it’s at a standstill. I decide to turn down North Point Parkway and take Kimball Bridge. There was no one going in my direction on NPP until a little bit before the turn on Kimball. For the first time since leaving work, I feel a small ounce of hope. While waiting to turn, I jump out of the car and run to the car behind me, asking to use their phone briefly so I can contact my husband and let him know of my driving direction change (in case anything were to happen).
6:30pm – I finally turn on Kimball Bridge and although there is traffic, we are moving slow and steady (at 4 MPH). Once I get up the hill, it is like a ghost town. There are hardly any cars on the road and I have never been happier. My poor baby has cried himself to sleep and all I can think of is getting close enough to my neighborhood so we could walk if need be. I just wanted to be home. I drive on my last and final road that my neighborhood is on, going 12 MPH since the roads are covered in ice because no cars have driven on them enough to keep them warm.  I am so tense my neck is cramping, my stomach is growling and I’ve almost peed myself (thankfully I did not!)
7:50pm – I am home. I pull in my driveway and start crying. I cannot believe what has transpired in the over 6 1/2 hours since I left work. My husband comes racing out to meet us and tells me he has never been so relieved. He had been working in another part of the city that day and got on the roads before everyone else did. It only took him 2 hours to get home and he was able to still stop at the grocery store and stock up.
Needless to say, that day was a nightmare for us, but the anxiety I felt for all the other stranded drivers (and those with children) didn’t go away. I was up all night scrolling through Facebook and texting friends. Some had to sleep in the lobby of a hotel, some had to abandon their car and walk the rest of the way, and some didn’t get home until after 1am. My heart went out to the parents who couldn’t get to their children and had to leave them at school or daycare. Work was cancelled today, we haven’t left the house and have been watching the news all day. We are so grateful to be together and to all be safe, and are praying for those who are not.

Henry’s Valentine’s Day Style

I always get so excited for Valentine’s Day. Mainly because I love hearts, red/pink and the decorations are always the cutest. Henry has a super cute outfit picked out for his Kissing Booth pictures with my friend Joleen next Saturday. We can’t wait! (I also ordered him a bow tie to dress this up a bit, and because every little boy needs a bow tie).
Before running to Target yesterday I had to snap some pictures of him wearing his new shoes. Matched with the wire heart and red stool, it was too perfect. He actually sat there and let me shoot for a few minutes (gasp!) Usually he is all squirmy and rarely stays still so I had to take advantage and got a little trigger happy.

It is freezing here in Georgia and although I would like to stay in warm PJ’s all weekend and drink Starbucks, Henry gets cabin fever so we may need to go out for a bit. I hope everyone has a great weekend and stays warm!
