5 Ways to Treat a Cold This Winter

This post is sponsored by Kimberly Clark but the content and opinions expressed here are my own.

This past month in Georgia we have experienced some extremely cold temperatures and even snow! I’m not complaining one bit because it’s nice to have actual seasons again. I honestly love cold weather and cooler temps and it’s been a while since we had a real winter. Since the Atlanta summers are so brutal, I literally daydream about snow-covered streets and endless hot chocolates by a warm fire. I remember on Evelyn’s first Christmas it was 75 degrees and she had to wear a floral summer romper because her warm weather clothes and work uniforms would have been too hot. Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed, haha. However, with colder temperatures we’ve been having comes the inevitable lingering holiday cold that has hit our household off and on and doesn’t seem to want to leave. Fortunately, there are some things I’ve learned over the years that can help find this dreaded sickness.

Warm liquids are your friend. Not only is staying hydrated extremely important in our day-to-day life but even more so when we’re sick. My favorite drink when I have a cold is definitely tea. It feels great on my throat and coats it so I can get some relief. From green tea to chamomile tea, they always seem to give my immune system the boost it needs to kick my cold. Just be careful not to choose a tea that has a lot of caffeine in it since you might end up with jitters in the middle of the night when you’re trying to sleep.

Keep Kleenex Anti-viral and Kleenex Lotion tissues in all areas of your house! I’m not kidding about this one. We have boxes of Kleenex in all bathrooms, nightstand tables, in the living room, office, kitchen and even in the car. I don’t mess around when it comes to congestion or runny noses, especially with two young children who are in school. The lotion tissues are made with aloe vera and pure vitamin E to moisturize the delicate skin around your nose. Nothing is worse than being sick and dreading blowing your nose because it’s raw from wiping. I make sure my kids always use these on their little noses. The Kleenex Anti-viral tissues can help keep germs from spreading to classmates and back and forth to our family. They have three soft layers for proactive care and the moisture-activated middle layer kills 99.9% of cold and flu viruses. These are great for on the go in the car and diaper bag. And remember, there is a RIGHT way to blow your nose. Close one nostril at a time and lightly blow through each one, NOT at the same time.

Getting enough (and even extra) sleep is imperative. There is such a thing as “sleeping” away cold or flu. Sometimes our bodies are so run down from indulging in too many sweets, too many drinks, and too much stress that our immune systems are weakened, hence we’re more susceptible to colds. Repeated stress taxes our body in so many ways and before you know it, the dreaded cold hits home and you’re hit with body aches and chest congestion. Letting your body have the rest it needs is key to a quicker recovery.

Soak in a bath. When I’m feeling run-down with a bad head cold, I love to soak in a hot bath with some lavender oil to relax and decongest. Not only does the warm water help with aches and pains, but it relaxes me so I can fall asleep easier. The steam of a hot bath can also help dry out the mucus accumulating in our throat. I like to use a meditation app while in the bath so I can really clear my head and not focus on how crappy I feel.

Take Zinc! Experts say if you take it at the first sign of a cold that it can help ease the symptoms faster. My mother always swears by this and takes Zinc daily. A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal reported that Zinc, not Vitamin C, is the best for fighting colds. It’s relatively inexpensive so be sure to always keep a bottle around and add to your daily vitamin intake!

Have you been hit with the dreaded winter cold this season? If so, let me know what you’re go-to cold remedies are in the comments! And be sure to stock up on Kleenex at your local Walmart, either in-store or online! Now is a great time to take advantage of their two-day shipping!
